Discover the history of Repubblica Square

One of the significant developments that took place after Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 1871 was the construction of Piazza della Repubblica Rome. The astonishing area was planned by the architect Gaetano Koch, who was also the designer of the porticos around the piazza.

Located adjacent to the city’s busiest train terminus, Termini station, this prominent square with the urban infrastructure used to be known as Piazza Esedra. It is spread across a circular area around a massive roundabout with a majestic fountain in the middle.

This glorious part of the Eternal City is accessible through the Repubblica metro station on Line A. The intersection of several major roads, including the Via Nazionale, makes this square a popular meeting hub. The piazza is also home to several restaurants, cafes, and shops.
